Last week I had a bladder stretch and instillation of heparin by local anaesthetic using EMDA (Electro Motive Drug Administration), and can highly recommend it. Having had a bladder stretch 4 years ago under a general anaesthetic and spending 3 days in hospital, I can not stress highly enough how much easier and painfree EMDA is. My urologist performed this procedure back in May and this time it was done by the Urodynamics Sister with the help of the pioneer of the machine, under the NHS. Last time my bladder was totally normal (going 6 times a day and once at night and PAINFREE) for about 5 weeks before it reverted back to IC symptoms. So far so good this time, but it is going to be repeated again next week so that it may help me to be symptom free for much longer. My capacity pre treatment was about 150mls and in constant pain. Under EMDA my bladder capacity was 600mls! I have read on this message board that others rely on regular stretches. I wonder if they have a GA and know about this method of doing it. I will keep you all posted as to how I get on. There is something about EMDA in the Survival Guide but I do not think that this procedure is widely used yet. We must promote it to our urologists as it is safe, can be done in clinic and not in a theatre and no general anaesthetic used. Most of all it is easier for we IC sufferers as it is painfree and only takes about 1 hour of our time. Has anyone else had experience of this and did it work? 3 of us in our IC support group have had it done. 2 were successful and 1 not.
