Frozen Shoulder or Tendinosis Calcarea and Adhesive Capsulitis
This
diagnosis refers to conditions where the movement of the shoulder is severely
restricted. This usually is the result of lack of use following an injury,
causing pain. Usually abnormal bands of tissue grow between the joint
surfaces and calcium deposits may occur on the tendons. The pain is generally
considered to be the result of inflammation. Shock
wave therapy can cause the release of endorphins (which overcome pain)
and increase blood circulation which can dissolve calcium deposits.
The result, for a majority of cases, is a resolution of pain and a restoration
of the range of motion.
In the UK Genesis Medical supplies the Orthospec shock wave therapy system
from Medispec.
The Orthospec delivers pulses of sonic energy into the shoulder. Between
1500 and 2000 shocks are delivered in sessions lasting about 10 minutes.
With an average of two sessions a multi-centre report showed a success rate
of around 80% for both pain and function. The patients selected for the
study had not responded to conservative treatment and were suffering from
chronic long term pain. A copy of this report is available to therapists
from Genesis Medical or from Medispec at www.medispec.com.
