Urge Incontinence Treatments

To prevent the signals from the bladder nerves overwhelming the inhibitory reflex and stopping the bladder muscle contracting before time, either the bladder nerves must be weakened or the inhibitory reflex must be strengthened.

Drugs may be used to suppress the parasympathetic bladder nerves and usually this resolves     the urge incontinence. However, the drugs affect the entire parasympathetic nervous system and cause side effects such as dry mouth, dizziness and nausea. They do not cure the condition and must be taken continually or the urgency returns.

Electrostimulation of the inhibitory reflex to the bladder muscle with a very specific current will strengthen the nerve. The stronger inhibitory reflex returns the situation to normal and the urge incontinence is cured or significantly improved in the majority of people..

The electrostimulation current is delivered through a probe placed in the vagina or anal canal. The current feels like pins and needles and quite quickly any discomfort disappears as the person accomodates to the sensation.

Genesis Medical provides the Intellistim and Logistim, which cures or significantly improves Urge Incontinence in over 80% of cases with just 15-20 daily sessions lasting 20 minutes each. This is well researched and many clinical trials confirm these results.

The Logistim is the choice for those wishing to use the programs that are ready to use for stress and urge incontinence without changing the frequencies. Although the parameters can be changed, the Logistim does not automatically adjust the rest time according to the frequency selected as does the Intellistim.
Otherwise the performance of the two stimulators are the same.

Stress Incontinence Treatments - Pelvic Floor Strengthening

Treatments for stress incontinence involve exercise of the pelvic floor muscles to increase their strength or the injection of a bulking material around the urethra to narrow the tube through which the urine passes.

Exercise may be performed by simply contracting and releasing the pelvic floor muscles. This is known as Kegel exercise. It is important to recognise and to exercise only the pelvic floor muscles in this way. A doctor or therapist is usually needed to show how to exercise correctly.

Electrostimulation can be used to contract and relax the muscles and so exercise them. As the correct muscles are automatically exercised there is no need for special instruction on muscle recognition. Genesis Medical supplies two home stimulation devices, the Intellistim and the Logistim. These both contain treatment programmes to treat both urge and stress incontinence.

Visit our on line shop to purchase a home stimulation unit, or see Healthcare Professionals for information on clinic-based treatments using a home stimulator or the Phenix USB electrostimulation and biofeedback systems.

Faecal Incontinence

Faecal incontinence takes many forms. flatulance, loss of stool for many reasons, and constipation is closely related. There is always a solution to the problem. It is essential to seek professional help to clearly diagnose the problem and determine the best solution. Genesis Medical supplies the Phenix biofeedback and electrostimulation systems and appropriate probes to treat some forms of faecal incontinence and constipation.

Clinic Based Treatments

For clinic based treatments for urge, stress and faecal incontinence, Genesis Medical provides the Phenix electrostimulation and biofeedback systems with appropriate probes for stimulation and biofeedback (both EMG and pressure biofeedback).
